Project challenges
In 2023, Orange strengthened its CSR commitment by launching its “Lead the future” strategic plan. To support this ambition, Orange wanted to roll out a CSR training programme for the CSR managers of its subsidiaries in Africa and the Middle East, as well as their teams.
This training programme aimed to:
- strengthen subsidiaries’ CSR capacity for action, so that each entity can launch and deliver a new, tangible project aligned with Orange’s strategic objectives;
- improve understanding of CSR issues specific to the telecommunications sector;
- support implementation of Orange’s CSR commitments across the relevant business functions;
- certify participants to boost motivation, strengthen credibility and recognise their skills.
Solution provided
- A structured, action-oriented ESG programme deployed across 17 countries
To support Orange OMEA in rolling out its “Lead the Future” strategic plan, Des Enjeux et des Hommes and Sciences Po Executive Education co-designed and delivered a 7-month ESG training programme, fully delivered remotely, for CSR managers and subsidiary teams across Orange’s Africa and Middle East operations.
The programme had one clear objective: move from skills development to concrete action, enabling each subsidiary to initiate a CSR project aligned both with local priorities and the Group’s overall strategy.
- A learning architecture built around three ESG “seasons”, rooted in Orange’s business challenges
The programme was structured around three complementary seasons – Environment, Social and Governance – enabling progressive, coherent and systemic ownership of ESG issues specific to Orange OMEA’s multi-service model.
Season 1 – Environment
This first season equipped participants with practical tools on the Group’s key environmental levers, directly linked to the expansion and performance of telecom networks across the OMEA region. Work focused in particular on:
- measuring and reducing networks’ carbon footprint,
- solar power deployment for infrastructure,
- circular economy challenges (equipment, devices, recycling),
- building a Net Zero trajectory by 2040.
The content combined methodological input, Orange case studies and practical exercises tailored to subsidiaries’ local contexts.
Season 2 – Social
The Social season explored the societal impact of digital technology as a driver of local development, drawing on the Group’s flagship initiatives:
- digital inclusion through Orange Digital Centers,
- financial inclusion through Orange Money solutions,
- diversity, human rights and employee engagement, notably through the #OrangeEngageforChange programme.
Participants worked on how to adapt these initiatives to the social, economic and cultural realities of their countries, while strengthening alignment with Orange’s overall CSR strategy.
Season 3 – Governance
The final season focused on ESG governance fundamentals, which are essential to steering CSR initiatives and strengthening their credibility:
- non-financial reporting and managing CSR performance indicators,
- understanding and steering assessment frameworks (MSCI, EcoVadis – Platinum level),
- ethics and compliance, risk management, and integrating CSR into corporate strategy.
A particular emphasis was placed on helping CSR managers engage effectively with local general management and put in place governance aligned with their ESG maturity.
- An engaging, fully remote approach with a strong focus on action
The programme was designed as a 100% remote format, combining:
- 9 live sessions of 2 hours per season,
- 3 practical workshops of 2 hours per season,
- asynchronous modules (e-learning) to explore key topics in greater depth.
Sessions were delivered in both French and English to ensure accessibility and inclusion across all subsidiaries in the 17 countries involved.
Delivery was based on active learning: Orange OMEA field-based case studies, peer exchange, quizzes, collaborative workshops and experience-sharing, helping to scale up good practices across the MEA region.
- Project workshops to turn skills into tangible results
A key feature of the programme was the project workshops, which supported each subsidiary in defining and launching an operational CSR project aligned with:
- local ESG challenges (social, environmental and regulatory),
- Orange Group’s strategic priorities,
- each country’s level of CSR maturity.
This approach strengthened teams’ ability to move to action, while creating a shared CSR language and collective momentum within Orange OMEA.
- A recognised combination of expertise and a valued certification
The programme was co-delivered by experts from Sciences Po Executive Education and Des Enjeux et des Hommes, bringing complementary expertise in:
- CSR and ESG strategy,
- non-financial reporting and regulatory frameworks,
- facilitating transformation programmes,
- adult learning and remote international programme delivery.
At the end of the programme, participants received a certification issued by Sciences Po Executive Education, recognising the skills acquired and strengthening the credibility of CSR managers in each subsidiary, particularly in their dialogue with local management and headquarters.
