Integrating sustainability issues into all occupations: a challenge for training!

Published on 19/03/2025 - 5 minutes reading time

For a long time, CSR was seen as a separate thing that only the department in charge of it cared about, but now it's having a bigger impact on how companies work. Organisations are making bigger changes to better integrate environmental and social issues into their value chain. So how can HR departments support these transformations? How can we ensure that business lines integrate sustainability issues into their professional practices? Continuing education provides answers by identifying the skills that need to be developed and rethinking business approaches to embed CSR at the heart of corporate strategies for the long term.

Evolving skills: why integrate sustainability issues into professional training?

Whether it’s purchasing, marketing, communications, sales or finance, every function within the company is affected by the company’s ecological shift and has a role to play:

  • Responsible purchasing: buyers must master eco-design criteria, the levers for decarbonisation in different purchasing categories, supply chain traceability, and the evaluation of and dialogue with their suppliers.
  • Marketing and communication: it is no longer just a question of promoting CSR commitments, but of defining new offers that are compatible with planetary boundaries, making new modes of consumption desirable, and promoting efforts to reduce impacts in a transparent, clear and proportionate manner, without resorting to greenwashing.
  • Sales: recognising and understanding customer expectations regarding CSR, integrating sustainability issues into sales pitches and making CSR a competitive advantage.
  • Finance: anticipating ESG risks and opportunities, responding to new reporting requirements and integrating non-financial criteria into the management of the company.

Training then becomes an indispensable tool for acculturating, equipping and transforming practices.

4 key points for structuring professional training?

Our experience in supporting the design and deployment of professional training courses has enabled us to identify several key factors for successful training:

  1. Adopt a professional approach: each role has its own context and needs. Our training courses are designed to address the specific challenges of different professions and offer tools that can be put into practice immediately.
  2. Combine theory and practice: real-life case studies, role-playing and practical exercises enable participants to better integrate what they have learned.
  3. Promote dialogue and engagement: our training courses encourage discussion between participants so that they can work together to develop solutions tailored to their professional reality.
  4. Continuous training: regulations and societal expectations are changing rapidly. Our training programmes include refresher and support modules over time to help the profession implement its CSR roadmap.

The key role of HR in transformation through training

HR departments are at the heart of this transition and play a strategic role in disseminating and promoting CSR issues within the company. As the guardians of skills development and corporate culture, they must support employees in integrating new environmental and social challenges.

Involving employees in the CSR process is not limited to raising awareness and imparting knowledge. It also involves aligning HR processes with these new requirements: recruiting talent that is sensitive to sustainability issues, changing performance evaluation criteria, and integrating CSR into training and skills development programmes.

By rethinking their role in light of CSR, HR departments are becoming true catalysts for change, capable of transforming the company into a committed and resilient player in the face of changes in our society.

Sustainability issues are now unavoidable and impact all aspects of the company. Our training courses help accelerate this transition by equipping business lines to become active players in the CSR approach.
